Grapes and Grape Juice Prevent Blood Clots
Blood Clots can be prevented naturally. In recently published studies at two universities a research teams found that four glasses of grape juice a day can prevent your arteries from clogging and causing clots. It was found that the raw fruit was also effective. The teams were from the University of Montpellier, a French University and the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Dr John Folts the team lead used 15 people and found that purple grape juice prevents dangerous clotting even more effectively than aspirin. The flavonids in the juice reduce blood platelet stickiness by 40%. Purple grapes contain two powerful antioxidant flavonids, quercetin and rutin. It is speculated that these two antioxidants are responsible for the results. Dr Folts specializes in research of antioxidant foods and their effects on the cardiovascular system. Another study done by Dr. Folts with dogs showed the same results as the study on humans. This study was researched using both red and white grapes. In this study the red grapes showed blood clotting decreased and blood flow increased in the animals drinking red grape juice but not in the dogs drinking white grape juice. White grapes do not contain the phenols quercetin or rutin. It has long been known that wine, made from grapes, has a good effect on your circulatory system. In both grape juice and red wine it is the phenol effective that seems to be the ingredient that has the positive effect and prevents clogged arteries. Phenols are one of the most powerful of the fruits antioxidant family. Most doctors and researchers now recognize. Flavonids are a class of phenols. In the French University grape juice study scientist used hamsters on a high fat diet. They feed them the same amount of grape juice equal to what a 154 pound human would require. The amount equaled four glasses of juice a day or if they feed them the fruit it equaled three bunches of grapes a day.. They compared the grape juice drinking hamsters to hamsters who drank only water. They also tried the same tests using apples and apple juice. The apple has the same amount of phenols as grapes but purple grape juice has 2.5 times as much phenols as apple juice. Those hamsters given grape juice or the fruit equivalent had lower levels of cholesterol, less oxidative stress and most important less fat accumulation in their aorta. The aorta is the main blood vessel supplying the heart and when this vessel clogs it brings on a heart attack Of the four different fruits tested purple grape juice had the best and strongest effect, followed by purple grapes, apple juice and apples. The researchers stated that their results suggest the amount of phenols contained in a food have a direct effect on the antioxidant properties. The fruits also contain other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and carotenoids which could also contribute to their effects. The researchers state their work "provides encouragement that fruit and fruit juice may have significant clinical and public relevance." Our Super Fruit and Berries has 27 fruits, quercetin, resveratrol and an ORAC scale of 8000 per serving. In other words it strongly suggests if you want to help avoid a blood clot and therefore a heart attack eat a goodly amount of red grapes and other antioxidant rich foods and drink a lot of fruit juice especially purple grape.
