Schizandra is one of the components of the herbal medicine Shenmai San, which is used to treat coronary heart disease. The herb is also used for the treatment insomnia, irritation, palpitation and dyspnea. Schizandra is used as a general tonic and as sedative.. Schizandra contains phytoestrogens and this might explain why Schizandra is used by menopausal women to treat cardiovascular disease Eleuthero Root. This is the Chinese healing herb that used to be called Siberian ginseng. This name was banned for use in the US under the Ginseng labeling act of 2002. Eleuthero is a woodland plant native to southeastern Siberia and Korea, and adapted to the damp forests of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. A relative of the more famous red ginseng, eleuthero has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine since about 190 AD. It’s most popular traditional use is for energy, alertness and stamina. Other uses include strengthening the immune system and balancing blood sugar. I Astragalus Root is grown mainly in Northern China and Inner Mongolia. Chinese healers use this herb to stimulate the immune system giving the body strength to protect and heal itself. In China it is used as a treatment for cold and flu. The Chinese doctors also use it as a treatment for diabetes and to speed healing. A US pharmaceutical company has isolated a molecule from the Astragalus they cal TA-65 and it is being sold as an anti aging product. However, there is nothing as powerful for your system then that which comes directly from nature. Atractylus Root This is a Chinese herb that does not stand by itself. In Chinese medicine it is used in combination with other herbs as it is here to help the immune system and tone the body. In Chinese lore it is used as a Qi balancer. Ones Qi pronounced Chi is ones energy and energy flow. A very famous formula for ginseng commonly prescribed as a tonic by Chinese herbalists is a combination of equal parts of the following herbs: Ginseng, dried ginger, Atractylus, and Glycyrrhizae (licorice root). This combination, known as "Ginseng Soup," is especially beneficial to the digestive and metabolic functions and provides warmth and energy to the muscles. Licorice Root, unlike Atractylus, licorice is used not only in Chinese medicine but in many western modalities as well. One of my family members was given licorice root extract by her family physician to help combat high blood sugar, very unusual indeed. Licorice has been used by almost all ancient societies. Licorice was so valued in ancient Egypt that even King Tutankhamen was buried with a supply Licorice is included in most Chinese herb combinations to balance the other herbs and to promote vitality. It is a source of magnesium, silicon and thiamine. I am sure you already use it for such complaints as sore throat, cough, oral inflammation. Licorice’s main attribute is as an anti inflammatory and as such is used to combat arthritis pain. Licorice is also an antioxidant. Fo-Ti is another old and much honored medicinal use in combination and as a stand alone herb. In Chinese lore Chung Yun, a famous Chinese herbalist lived to be 256 years old, and ate Fo-Ti on a daily basis. He also had 24 wives and the responsibilities that went along with that. In China Fo Ti is called shou-wu and has a magic reputation for producing longevity. Maybe Fo Ti is the “Fountain of Youth” Fo Ti has been used in China for many ailments and disease. They include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatigue and atherosclerosis. Ginger Root is steeped in Chinese tradition but also has a great following in western medicine. Ginger is a strong antioxidant. It has an added benefit in that it can reduce the risk of heart disease, circulation disease and stroke because it has platelet inhibition like aspirin and Vitamin E. It keeps platelets from sticking together and clogging your blood vessels. It has also been found as an effective balancer of the immune system. Bupleurum Root is one of the most important herbs used in Chinese herbal medicine. The Chinese name for Bupleurum, chai hu., Bupleurum Root is a primary herb in dozens of classical formulations, which serve a wide variety of harmonizing activities, all of which regulate body energy, help relieve blockages in the body and discharge toxins safely from the system.
