Green Tea Antioxidant EGCG Polyphenols Catechins Flavonids

Green tea antioxidant health attributes have been highly praised form over 5000 years. Green tea has been the drink of choice the world for over but is especially popular in Asia. . Every time you turn around there is a study or and article praising the health attributes of tea but especially green tea. Most of the green tea is grown in either Japan or China. Not only that, but green tea is highly studied because people who drink it regularly have less heart disease, stroke and cancer. Even in Japan where these diseases are low the people who live and work in the Shizuoka Prefecture, a major tea farming area, have even less cancer than anyone in Japan.
This has been attributed to the high antioxidant content of green tea and green tea extract. Not only is green tea high in chlorophyll but also has abundant quantities of flavonoids. The flavonoids in turn have a chemical element called polyphenols which are the antioxidants, which counter the effects of free radicals.. Polyphenols have a sub group called catechins which are thought to be one of the very healthful antioxidant natural chemicals. Catechins are more abundant when the tea is cut from the tops of the bush and are fresh.. Catechins were discovered in the 1970s, when the scientist were looking for the reason the tea workers and people who lived in the tea growing areas were healthier.

Even the heavy smokers in the healthier areas were healthier on average. One catechin in particular, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), is found in no other plant than tea, and it's one of the most potent antioxidants yet discovered - up to twenty times stronger than Vitamin E. Numerous studies have found EGCg to be effective in preventing and inhibiting cancer growth.

ECGC has been the focus of recent testing. In trying to find a way to stop a fatal disease called severe sepsis, which has stumped scientists world wide, they tried green tea and it worked. This disease has foiled even the most advanced medical techniques. Over half who develop sepsis die. The study was done by a team led byDr. Haichao Wang. In this study Dr. Wang gave mice in the throes of severe sepsis the substance called EGCG found in Green Tea. He gave them the equivalent human amount of ten cups of green tea a day. The survival rate jumped from 53% in those that did not get the substance to a survival rate of 82% in those that did. They saved 25% more animals with green tea.

Catechins make up as much as 30 percent of the dry weight of green tea leaves, but only three to ten percent of black tea. Steeping the leaves for three to five minutes releases the optimal amount of catechinsThere have been over 100 studies done on green tea antioxidant and green teas other phytonutrients. The higher the quality of the tea the more antioxidants. A high quality green tea comes from the tops of young bushes and the fresher the tea the better.

The main focus of the studies have been in the prevention of cancers and those people who regularly drink green tea antioxidant reduce their risk of breast, stomach, esophagus, colon, and/or prostate cancer.
The biggest use for green tea is in weight loss area. There are thousands upon thousands who have lost weight using different green tea formulas some costing hundreds and hundreds some costing very little. Green tea is going to go down as one of the most beneficial herbal drinks of the century.

Green tea also contains vitamins A, C, and E. Vitamin C and E are well known antioxidants as well. Tea like all plants, were designed with many phytonutrients working together. All of the nutrients work together in ways not understood yet by scientists. They keep trying to isolate each ingredient trying to find the magic patentable bullet. The food or plant always works better as a whole. Green tea is an enjoyable respite during the day and the health benefits of the green tea antioxidant are a great bonus.
