Green tea extract in a recent research program concluded that green tea users are less likely to die from heart disease and ever other disease except cancer. This article was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association., in January 2009.

The research team led by Dr. Shinichi Kuriyama did an 11-year study tracking over 40,530 light-to-heavy green tea drinkers in northeastern Japan. It appears the amount of green tea consumed is associated with lowered death rates, according to the study. In the first seven years, researchers found that heavy green tea drinkers enjoyed a 26 percent lower death rate than those people who consumed less per day.

Those who drank five or more cups of green tea a day had a death rate overall that was 16 percent lower that those who drank less than one cup per day throughout the study period. Women had a lower death rate than men. Researchers note that difference may be explained by the fact that perhaps more men in the study were smokers.
