Herbs and Herbal therapy have been used in America for quite a number of years but the Chinese have used them and alternative therapies for many illnesses for thousands of years. Many cultures including Native American Indians have relied on natures bounty to treat a number of health problems. People today want to stay healthy and herb supplements are increasingly popular. Even some physicians are beginning to recognize herbs medical value.

Herbs and herb supplements are not regulated by the FDA in the same manner as prescription or over the counter drugs. The manufacturer of these products does not have to prove the safety of the supplement before it is put on the market. They are allowed to say that a supplement addresses a nutrient deficiency, supports health, or is linked to a particular body function, such as immunity if there is research to support the claim. Herbs manufacturers are required to follow standards to ensure the product is processed consistently. Herbs were used in medicine by the Arabs, the Greeks, the Chinese and almost every culture from the dawning of man in Africa.

Through history herbs have been safe. Because many medications are herb based and many herbs are strong some prescription medications and some herbs may interact and cause a problem. Because of this check with your doctor or better yet a pharmacist to see if there are any medication herb conflicts. Your pharmacist and hopefully your doctor will be able to access all the latest research on any herbs and advise you as to any conflicts. Read the labels carefully and do not exceed the recommended dosage. If you have any adverse reactions, discontinue the supplement and call your doctor. Taking herbals by themselves have caused little or no problems for millions of people over very long periods of time. Only since drugs have become so common have herb contraindications surfaced. It is not the herbs that are unsafe it is the drugs.

Herbal supplements are made from plants or plant parts, such as leaves, flowers, or seeds. They are used for their flavor, scent, or therapeutic properties. Supplements may contain a single herb or mixture of herbs. “Botanical” is often used as a synonym for “herb.” Certainly herbal and natural products are popular because people these days are concerned about what they are putting into their bodies. Herbs are used in everything from supplements to skincare and shampoo, and research has shown some to be effective for some health conditions,ongoing and future research will find many thousands more conditions herbs will help. My grandparents used many different herbs for ailments. They used cloves for toothache, ginger tea for stomach upsets, and aloe for burns. I and my family still use the same herbs and more than my grandparents did. The reason we use them is they worked then and they work today. Herbs have very little side effects, where every drug on the market has side effects and many drugs kill people every day. Drugs are an attorneys dream.
