Super Food Super Health Foods
Super Food is a word phrase invented by nutritionists and other health professionals to describe a food which is more nutrient dense than other foods. It is also used to describe products and whole food supplements which are more nutritionally complete or have more nutrient power. I use it myself to describe our own line of supplements which are very nutrient rich and contain up to 150 nutritional ingredients. Almost all fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, spices and some grains should be classified as super food. You need to eat a balanced diet of the above categories in order to obtain optimal health. There are some foods in this category that if you over eat can cause you problems in the weight area. Some nuts contain high quantities of fat and some fruits contain lots of natural sugars. So over eating of these foods or any food can add to weight gain and are not needed in high quantity for health. Most people recommend 2000 calories and up to maintain health and vitality where I recommend eating only 1200 to 1800 calories a day unless you are an active athlete, runner, weight lifter or super active on the job. Most humans can do just fine on 1500 calories a day. Since the invention of processed food and the large number of restaurants of all kinds we have become a society of over eaters. This is not true in all countries just the highly industrial ones like America, Europe and now even the orient. Note: Eat raw and organic whenever possible. Organic has 40% or more nutrition than non organic and cooked, even steamed can loss up to 40% or more of the nutrients especially vitamins. Super Food FruitsThe fruits which most people consider super are goji berries, acai berries, bilberry and blueberries. You can also count mangosteen, noni, kiwi and pomegranate. All these fruits are very high in antioxidants and other phytonutrients which research is finding help prevent heart disease, cancer, stroke, arthritis and most everything else. They also contain high vitamin and mineral contents as well as fiber and water. You will note that the above fruits are located in different areas of the world. With the increased transportation and processing methods like freeze drying they are available almost anywhere in some form. However, if you live for example in Europe bilberry will do you just fine. A late comer to the super foods category is rarely mentioned in most web sites and that is the Sacha Incha fruit which has the highest content of omega 3 available in a plant.
Super VegetablesSuper vegetables are easy to spot. The ones with the darkest and brightest colors are the most nutrient dense. Leading this list are the cruciferous family which include kale, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. Next in line are sweet potatoes, their color provides antioxidants and they are full of fiber. Their are even purple ones, more antioxidants. The same goes for carrots and brightly colored bell peppers. Last but not least is a fruit but most people call the tomato a vegetable. It is high in the antioxidant lycopene and is one of the few vegetables that can actually be more nutritious when cooked like pasta sauce. Many people consider some beans a super food because of the high protein content for a vegetable. Dark red and black are best.
Super Nuts Nuts have a bad reputation because of their high fat content. Also another bad rap given nuts is by the peanut because of the tendency for people to be allergic to them. However the peanut is not a nut but a legume (bean). Nuts are also a balance food in that they have both protein and carbos in about equal amounts. Nuts also have good quantities of omega three's and vitamins. Most of the fat in nuts is of the unsaturated variety and the body needs the good fats to operate especially the brain.
Super SeedsFlax seeds strongest attribute is their very high quantities of omega threes and the antioxidant lignans. Omega threes are essential fatty acids which have been shown to reduce heart disease risk and lignans which have been shown to fight many different types of cancer. Omega 3 is also a really powerful anti inflammatory. Lignans are polyphenols an antioxidant and a fiber. Lignans have been found to be effective against both cancer and heart disease in recent studies. Another newcomer to the my list of superfoods is Chia seeds which ounce for ounce put flax seed to shame and can provide all thye omega 3 you will ever need. Both Dr OZ and Dr Wiel have said" They may be one of the healthiest foods around". Chia seeds are said to be the highest source of omega 3 in plants but many argue that sacha incha fruit is the highest. Whichever, Chia seeds are easiest to get. 1 oz of Chia Seeds has 4915mg of omega 3 and are also high in protein. Cumin seed also ranks in this category because of its ultra high antioxidant rating and easily found and used in most foods.
Super SpicesThe leading super spices are cloves, cinnamon, oregano, cumin and garlic. They are available everywhere are inexpensive and most people can find dozens that can spice up their foods and taste good. Cloves have the highest antioxidant ranking in the plant kingdom and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon has as many antioxidants as a 1/2 cup of blueberries.
Also on the super list are spices like ginger, turmeric and red pepper. These spices contain super nutrients including carotenoids, curcumins, catechins, lignan and of course high antioxidant content. Research has been done and finds that these nutrients can regulate blood sugar, are anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, increase circulation and can stop heart attacks. Raw food contains the nutrients that prevent disease and slow down aging. Some have the power to strengthen blood vessels, help memory and kill cancer cells. All in all spices are one of the best disease preventives of all the super foods. Super Food GrainsLeading my list of super grains is Salba and quinoa. Salba is also called Chia from Chia pet fame. Quinoa is really a seed but in the US and most of Europe it is considered a grain and used to make bread products. Both have very high protein quantities and help show you do not need to eat meat to get protein. Salba is also high in omega 3 while Quinoa has high quantities of vitamins and minerals. Quinoa is also contains a good selection of essential amino acids and both are good sources of fiber. The other super grain is unprocessed oats lightly cooked or used in baking. High in fiber it has been found to lower cholesterol and lowers risk of heart disease and stroke. Use raw organic oats or steel cut oats for the highest nutritional value. I recommend staying away from wheat unless it is in sprout form. I also recommend buckwheat which ranks low on the glycemic scale and it is gluten free making it the best substitute for wheat.
Other Super FoodsGreen tea leads this list for the powerful nutrients and antioxidant protection. Eggs make my list as the only animal food. They are high in protein low in calories. New studies show if eaten for breakfast you stay full longer and do not effect cholesterol levels. Eggs are high in vitamins and minerals especially from chickens that are allowed to roam. One of these is choline very important for brain development. Next is all the bee products. Bee pollen, bee propolis, royal jelly and honey. It is a great sweetener and bee pollen is a complete food on a par with chlorella. It has all the amino acids necessary for life, as well as vitamins and minerals. It is a great energy food and full of antioxidants. I also recommend that bee products be like a supplement food not as an everyday food. Although I use it everyday in my supplements because I have found it is great for my energy.Last but not least on my list is chlorella. Chlorella is an algae and is not considered a food but it can be. More protein than beef this super food has enough nutrients to substain your life forever.
This is an extensive list of foods much more so than most. It takes time to change your diet and it takes time to acquire new tastes but eating better will keep you healthier and help you with the aging process.
