What is Noni? Morinda citrifolia

What is Noni? It has been used by Polynesian healers for thousands of years, the Noni tree bears fruit 365 days a year. The scientific name is Morinda citrifolia The tree grows all over the Polynesian islands but is mostly found in Hawaii and the islands around Tahiti. It originally came from Asia and is still grown there but is rarely an export. Since the healing power of Noni has become better known and the demand has increased it is also grown in Panama, Dominican Republic, Cuba and South America.

The largest farms and wild areas are found in Hawaii. The Noni Tree grows to an average of about 30 feet tall. However, the Hawaiian Islands due to the rich volcanic soil have trees in the fifty foot range. The noni fruit is an odd looking fruit when compared to the fruits we are used to. See photo. There is always a discussion, mainly by marketers as to which noni juice is better or what is the difference between noni grown in different islands. The simple answer is there is no difference. Research has shown between Tahitian noni juice and Hawaiian Noni juice both produce the same effects on drinkers and there is no discernible difference in nutrient content. There may be slight differences in vitamin and mineral content depending on the year and the type of soil it is grown in. The same is true of any vegetable or fruit grown anywhere else in the world.

We are discussing here only 100% Noni juice. If anything, anything at all is added then all bets are off. All of the research and benefits you read about Noni on this site refer only to 100% Noni Juice. There is no added water, other juices or additives of any kind.

Noni has over 160 nutrients and is one of ther most nutrient dense fruits on the planet. It has lots of Vitamin C and is heavy in fiber content. Unlike many fruits it is also high in protein. However, noni’s power seems to come from the Phytochemicals present in the plant. Noni has many Phytochemicals that other fruits and vegetables do not have and many that are present in many fruits.

The research is just not present to a large degree at this time. What research has been done has centered on serotonin which is known as the "mood molecule" because it modulates raw information and gives it emotional tone. As well as xeronine (which among its many benefits repairs protein cells); other compounds which we will elaborate on in other pages are Scopoletin which has anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity. Others are Anthraqunone, Terepins, flavonoids, lignans, Damnacanthal, and alkaloids among others. Noni has a unique mixture of chemical compounds found in no other food.
